Appointing a DPO is Mandatory in Singapore

All organisations, including sole proprietorships, are required to appoint at least one person to act as a Data Protection Officer (DPO). The DPO is responsible for ensuring that the organisation complies with the PDPA. However the company’s controller is solely responsible for the organisation’s compliance to PDPA.

Organisations are required to ensure that at least one DPO’s business contact is made available to the public and the DPO must also be filed in ACRA bizfile.

The DPO can be the business owner himself/herself, but he/she will need to ensure compliance with the PDPA. The business owner/controller can also appoint someone within the organisation to take on this extra responsibilities. Alternatively, the business owner may choose to outsource the DPO to us at “SG Inc” where we provide outsourced DPO as a service. Past enforcement cases by PDPC have fined Organisations that failed to appoint a DPO between $5,000 to $20,000.
